Sunday Morning Ramblings

So…once again, it’s been awhile. You know, I really thought I’d be all over the whole blogging thing once I moved and had things to write about, but in actuality I’ve just been living. Crazy, right?

In retrospect, I would’ve written about The Bachelor from day 1. I would’ve talked about how I thought Juan Pablo was completely fake, and how I felt like everything about him seemed forced and fixed for television…everything from his accent to his relationship with his daughter to the fact that he was looking for a wife. Of course, I didn’t write about it (or anything for that matter, see above), but if I had, everyone would’ve told me I was crazy for thinking that way and there was a reason why America loved him so much and why he was chosen to be the next Bachelor. Then, as the season went on, I’d continue to say this stuff and people would begin to see it and then I’d get to say “I told you so,” kind of like I did in real life to Adam and my coworkers.

Speaking of coworkers, work is good. Like…really good. Like…I got really lucky that I was able to find a job that is so perfect for me before moving out here. I just had my three month review. Stop and think about that for a second. I’ve already been living in San Diego for three months. Which is crazy but kind of awesome. My review went really well and they seem really happy with me, which is great because I’m really happy there every single day. My coworkers are awesome, the company is really incredible and I’m passionate about the kind of work we do, and the work I do on a day-to-day basis is something I thoroughly enjoy. So yeah, the whole job thing is definitely a win.

You know what else is a win? Life in general. Living with Adam has been really great, and I think it has exceeded both of our expectations. And don’t even get me started on how happy Maeby is. She is (unsurprisingly) my baby and her happiness comes before anyone else’s (Adam included, and he knows this). To say she’s happy is probably an understatement…

We go hiking, we go to the beach, and we go running a few times a week. It’s crazy to think that a year ago, I was living here…

…which is really beautiful as well, don’t get me wrong, but now I’m living here…

Life is crazy, it really is.

What else have I been up to?

Trying to make friends. This is obviously really important and really hard once you become a real-life adult out of college, but my goal is to do at least one social thing a week (usually weekends, and usually more). So like last night, I went to my friend’s house and hung out with her and a few other people. The week before, I went out for another friend’s birthday. It’s hard but I’m trying.

Running! It’s beautiful here…the weather and the scenery. So, I’ve been trying to take advantage and I’ve actually been making a conscious effort to get back into the whole running game. Once I’m doing it regularly, I love it, it’s just getting me to the point where I’m doing it often. This past week, Maeby and I ran 4 days, for a total of 22 miles. It felt great, just ask Maeby. Yesterday I also bought new running shoes (Brooks, for the first time ever), so if I like them maybe I’ll write about them.

Working. Work is busy and traffic sucks, so it’s usually 10-hour days total (with work and my commute), but I’m not mad. It’s kind of awesome.

I suppose that’s about it for now. I’m currently sitting in our backyard. Adam is still asleep, the sun is out and bird are chirping around me, and Maeby is eating sticks.

Life is good, and happy Sunday!

More Louisiana and Texas.

Dinner at Morels Restaurant in New Roads, Louisiana. So, so good…

Fried alligator and crawfish from Prejean’s in Lafayette, LA…

Finally made it to Texas…

Our beautiful hotel room at the Windgate in Round Rock, TX. This was by far our favorite hotel from our trip, and the second cheapest. Our room included a sofa bed (which we obviously didn’t use), king size bed, cable, free wifi (this was also the best wifi of all the hotels we stayed at), and a free breakfast in the morning (again, the best breakfast of all the hotels, as it included hot entrees, including biscuits and gravy).

We might have had BBQ in Nashville but Texas BBQ is different. We picked up brisket, sausage, ribs, baked beans, green beans, creamed corn and tamale pie at Johnny T’s in Round Rock before stopping at the hotel for the night. It was all amazing.

Maeby wanted some of our food.

We stopped at Pebble Hills Dog Park in El Paso, TX on our way to New Mexico. We had a little trouble finding it (the GPS directed us to a library, and the park was a little bit past that), but once we found it, Maeby had a great time. She also got to make new friends, and the people there were really nice (just as they were in Jackson, MS).

More Texas.

IMG_5969

We had to stop at Whataburger. It had to happen; we were in Texas, after all. And Adam wouldn’t stop talking about how we had to go there…so we did. I wasn’t disappointed. It was really good.

On to New Mexico…

More Nashville, Some Louisiana, and a Dog Park.

A few days into our trip, I gave a quick update about the weather. And it’s true–things don’t always go as planned.

If we went north, we’d hit bad weather in Missouri; our original route across Arkansas and Oklahoma City was the worst possible option; and if we went south through Dallas, we’d be driving through iced-over roads.

We stayed an extra night in Nashville, got drinks and some reallllllly delicious fried green tomatoes at Merchants, stopped in a couple of other bars for live music, and then wrapped up our evening with a second round of Nashville bbq at Jack’s Barbeque.

It was all so good.

The next morning, we made our way south. Way south…to a small town about 40 minutes outside of Baton Rouge, where Adam’s former boss lives. On our way, we stopped in Jackson, Mississippi at this wonderful shelter and dog park, so Maeby could get in some exercise. She had a blast.

The park was located at CARA – Community Animal Rescure & Adoption and I really don’t have enough nice things to say about the staff there.

As someone who is very passionate about animal rescues and shelters, I really admired the people who worked here, because they were kind and caring (and loved Maeby), and they were providing shelter to over 300 dogs. They take in strays and owner surrenders, help nurse sick dogs and cats back to health, and find homes for all of these animals. I don’t think I could ever do what these people do; I’d get too attached and have such a hard time dealing with some of the animal cruelty cases they handle on a daily basis. If you have a moment though, please check out and like their Facebook page. They are an amazing organization staffed by an incredible group of people.

There’s more to come…

Another Week Gone By, Another Week Closer to California.

Monday.

Left Maeby at my mom’s house so I could run some errands before and after work.

monday

Off to the post office I went, to send out the brownies I made on Sunday, along with some other handmade things. Sometimes I get creative. This was one of those times.

After work, I stopped by my mom’s house and picked Maeby up. She was wiped out the rest of the night.

Tuesday.

Tuesday started off with an early-morning run before work, while watching the latest episode of How I Met Your Mother…

tuesday

Then I caught the beginnings of a beautiful sunset on my way out of work…

tuesday2

Came home to find a package sitting in front of my bedroom door. The roommate had picked it up and put it there. I knew it was an early Valentine’s Day gift from Adam, and I was so unbelievably happy about what it was, because I have wanted this print for awhile now…

tuesday3

Then Maeby cuddled up to me…

tuesday1

And cuddled up to me even more because she is definitely the most cuddly dog ever…

tuesday4

And then my roommate took this ridiculous picture of us. My dog looks jacked, by the way. I swear she’s not that muscular at all. She’s also not a big dog…

Wednesday.

Worked.

Caught another beautiful sunset.

wednesday1

Went to Crossfit.

Then Skyped with Adam, because he got his gift in the mail.

Thursday.

Valentine’s Day.

Morning time with Maeby.

Adam sent me flowers. I feel terrible because they didn’t get to me and when he contacted the company, even though he ordered them to arrive at my work before 5:00 pm, they told him they wouldn’t be able to get to me on time and they’d bring them on Friday. I’m not upset, I just feel terrible, because I know he put was really excited about it. To be honest, I’m just thrilled by the fact that he thought to do it.

Oh well.

Came home and ate some leftover Indian food. Chicken saag? Yes please.

Then Skyped with Adam for awhile.

Friday.

Early morning walk with Maeby, caught the sun rising…

Got some good news regarding Adam’s birthday present. I won’t post about it since he sometimes reads here, but…great news. Great, great news.

Flowers from Adam! They made it. I got into work, and just as I was putting my lunch away, I noticed the delivery guy dropping off the flowers I was supposed to get yesterday, but didn’t. They were absolutely perfect and I couldn’t wait to get them home and put on my windowsill.

Work.Work.Work.

Maeby got one of her Christmas presents…finally.

Made chevre and fig preserve-stuffed chicken breasts.

I took Maeby for a walk and experienced something pretty scary. The good news is that I’m okay and Maeby is okay. And all is well.

Saturday.

Morning errands. A couple inches of snow fell overnight and everything looked beautiful.

Visit with my grandma. She’s 96 years old, by the way.

Treadmill workout while watching “Tiny Furniture“…ran a total of 4 miles, walked a couple, and did abs.

Best way to spend Sunday morning?

Arrested Development and an early morning run…

Easiest recipe (if you can call it a recipe) in the world to come later this week.
